On Top of the World in Jungfraujoch
Towering over all of Europe, the Jungfraujoch region in Switzerland is sure to be a memorable highlight of any rail holiday to the small but gorgeous country. If your experiences of scenic Switzerland (or any other picturesque mountainous regions) have all included looking up at snow-dusted peaks, imagine how it feels to dramatically travel up one and look down!
Our highly desired rail journey. Switzerland's Lakes and Mountains, starts in the country's top tourist destination, Geneva. Marvel at the towering Jet d'Eau fountain in the Rhône river, which is especially spectacular at night. Next catch the train to Montreux. The journey is a lovely, scenic trip taking in sparkling vistas of Lake Geneva. Your itinerary takes you to the spectacular beautiful Interlaken, where you’ll travel by scenic train to Kleine Scheidegg, enjoying the marvellous scenery the entire way.
After reaching the station at Eigergletscher, which is well known for its mountain restaurant and Huskies, you’ll board the Jungfraubahn. The attractive red and yellow carriages of this railway contrast beautifully with the white snow on the ground. Slowly inch higher and higher on Europe’s highest-altitude railway station, stopping in a tunnel carved from the North Face of the Eiger and at the Eismeer viewing point for spectacular photo opportunities.
Finally, you’ll reach the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at an impressive 11,333 feet above sea level. The views from the ‘Top of Europe’ are as spectacular as you’d expect, with snow-capped peaks and pristine white plains stretching for miles and miles beneath your feet. Take in the breathtaking views of the Black Forest in Germany and the Vosges Mountains in France from this most impressive vantage point. It’s one you just have to experience for yourself. Travel there from Geneva by rail and don’t miss any of the awe-inspiring scenery en route with Railbookers’ Switzerland's Lakes and Mountains train journey.
There are more trip options to choose from, like Grand Italian Lakes and Swiss Mountains, which includes our favourite stops in Switzerland but also includes stops in Italy like Milan, Rome, Lake Como and more.
